RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State received a huge effort from its senior class on Senior Night, but it wasn't enough as Duke swept the Wolfpack by the scores of 31-29, 30-25, 30-15 in an Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball match on Saturday night at Reynolds Coliseum.
Dorette Burwell led Duke with nine kills and 10 digs on the evening. Krista Dill and Rachel Vander Griend helped give the Blue Devils the edge in the first two games. Dill shot .400 for seven kills, while Vander Griend finished the match with a hitting percentage of .429 for eight kills and a dig.
Senior Charece Williams had one of her better nights of the season, ending with a .258 hitting percentage for a match-high 16 kills and eight digs. Fellow seniors Alison Kreager, Nikki Stemler and Jackie Stratton also exhibited improved play. Kreager finished with seven kills and nine digs, Stemler tallied up six kills to go with six digs, and Stratton added three assists. Freshman setter Lindi Sheppard finished the match with 32 assists, three kills and four digs.
The Wolfpack actually took Duke to game point in the first game before dropping three straight points to lose 31-29, and then was within a point at 20-19 in the second but Duke extended the lead to four points at 25-21 and finally took the game 30-25. The Blue Devils, however, put away the Wolfpack quite convincingly in the third and final game of the match, 30-15.
Duke improved to 17-3 overall and 9-3 in the ACC. NC State fell to 5-16 overall and 1-11 in the conference.
The Wolfpack will return to action on Tuesday, October 30 with a 7 p.m. match at Reynolds Coliseum. This match was originally scheduled for September 11, but was rescheduled. This will be the Wolfpack's final home match of the season.
