Joey Holcomb recently completed his second season as an assistant coach with the Wolfpack baseball coaching staff.Â
After a shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Holcomb played a vital role in helping the Pack reach the College World Series in 2021 and turn in one of the most historic seasons in NC State baseball history, highlighted by a No. 3 finish in the national rankings. He specializes in working with the catchers, and after the team lost first-rounder Patrick Bailey to the 2020 MLB Draft, help helped to mold Luca Tresh into a plus defender behind the plate to fill that void. Tresh was selected in the 17th round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals, as he committed just five errors on the year and threw out 24 percent of runners attempting to steal a bag.
Â
Holcomb brought experience to NC State from a winning program to a veteran staff that has long prided itself in player growth and development, as he comes to Raleigh after spending the last seven seasons as an assistant coach, including the last four as a recruiting coordinator, at UNCG.
Â
"Coach Holcomb will be a welcomed addition to our program. He brings a proven track record from UNCG where they recruited student athletes of high character and developed them into winners both on and off the field," said Avent upon his hiring.
During his tenure with the Spartans, Holcomb helped the squad consistently post some of the best numbers nationally in several offensive categories. Some of those highlights include pacing the NCAA in triples in 2017 and '18, as well as guiding the team to hitting at or above .320 for three consecutive seasons (2016-18).
Â
"I am truly grateful for this opportunity to join the NC State baseball family," said Holcomb upon his hiring. "This program is viewed as one of the best in college baseball, and that is a testament to the hard work and leadership of Coach Avent and his staff. I am extremely excited to learn from this staff and work with some of the best players across the country."
Â
Under Holcomb's guidance, the Spartans offense broke school records in batting average, hits, RBIs, doubles, triples and on-base percentage.
Â
"Joey is a fantastic baseball coach, as well as a great husband and father. His attention to detail and commitment to excellence is second to none. He and his family will be tremendous assets to the NC State program," said former Spartans skipper and current Notre Dame head coach Link Jarrett on Holcomb's hiring.
He and his wife, Brittany, have three sons, Graham, Reed, and Owen.Â
