WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – NC State couldn't slow down the Wake Forest bats as the Wolfpack fell to the Demon Deacons 18-7 in seven innings Saturday at Gene Hooks Field.
Wolfpack starter Cooper Consiglio (2-3) entered the game with a 2.75 ERA, but after allowing 11 earned runs on 10 hits in just 3.1 innings, Consiglio's ERA jumped to 5.03.
Wake Forest scored 10 runs between the second and fourth innings, including a six-spot. After hitting six home runs last night, Wake Forest hit five today, including a walk-off to end the game in seven innings.
The Pack put seven runs on 11 hits and held a 3-1 lead after the top of the second. The Demon Deacons responded, took the lead, and held it for the rest of the game. The only inning in which Wake Forest didn't score was the third.
Mikey Ryan hit his ninth home run of the season, finishing the day 3-for-4. Dalton Bargo, Drew Lanphere, and Brayden Fraasman each doubled, with Lanphere adding an RBI and Fraasman bringing in two runs.
Rett Johnson got a base hit in his last at-bat of the afternoon to push his hitting streak to 13 games.
Each team had 21 runners on base and 13 in scoring position. However, the Wolfpack went just 5-21 with runners on base, while Wake Forest was 12-21. With runners in scoring position, Wake Forest was 6-13, while the Pack was 2-13.
The Pack took the lead in the top of the third on a Fraasman double and an RBI from Johnson, and looked to add on, but the Demon Deacons kept the deficit to two after an attempted squeeze play from Luke Nixon resulted in Fraasman being thrown out at home plate, a call confirmed after review.
NC State had the bases loaded at the top of the fourth with one out, but was only able to scratch across one run as Chris McHugh walked in a run and extended his on-base streak to 21 consecutive games.
Aiden Kitchings and Truitt Manuel came out of the bullpen following Consiglio.
NC State will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow, April 19th, at 1 p.m.
