RALEIGH, N.C. – After No. 14 NC State took a 2-0 lead, Campbell scored seven unanswered runs, including three in both the sixth and seventh innings, to beat the Wolfpack 7-2 Tuesday night at Doak Field. It was NC State's third straight loss.
The Wolfpack (18-7) managed just four hits tonight and didn't record any after the fifth inning. Rett Johnson scored both runs for the Wolfpack, each coming on a ground ball out. Chris McHugh had two hits and one RBI to increase his team-leading total of 32. Dalton Bargo's 18th RBI of the season put the Pack on the board first.
Despite achieving a career high in innings pitched and strikeouts in his fourth start of the season, Luke Hemric (1-1) took the loss after allowing a go-ahead three-run home run in the sixth inning to the Camels. Hemric pitched five innings, giving up four runs on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Sam Harris, Anderson Nance, and Aiden Kitchings all came out of the bullpen. Kitchings pitched two innings, allowing just a walk and recording three strikeouts.
NC State was 1-11 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners on base.
For the 16th time this season, the Pack scored in the first inning after Johnson reached base on a leadoff walk and later scored. Luke Nixon sacrificed bunt to advance him, and a McHugh infield single put him at third, allowing Bargo to drive him in.
In the third inning, Johnson again got on base with a single. After a Camel fielding error, the Pack had runners on first and second with only one out. Johnson used his speed to advance to third on a wild pitch and scored on a McHugh ground ball.
Campbell scored after consecutive walks and a double to reduce the deficit by half in the third inning.
Two infield singles and a home run in the top of the sixth put the visitors ahead for good, as the Wolfpack was unable to generate any offense in the later innings to mount a comeback.
NC State will hit the road and head to Atlanta, GA, for a top-15 matchup against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, starting on Friday, March 27th at 7 p.m. Friday's broadcast will be available on ACCNX, with the final two games of the series on ACC Network.
