WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Chris McHugh hit seven home runs last season. In just 21 games in 2026, he has matched that total, homering and setting a career high with six RBIs to lead NC State to a 14-2 victory over UNCW on Tuesday night at Brooks Field in Wilmington.
McHugh now has 29 RBIs on the season to top the Wolfpack (17-4). Brayden Frassman went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs, while Brandon Novy hit his third home run of the season and finished with three RBIs. Rett Johnson continues to excel at hitting and getting on base, ending with two hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
All nine starters scored at least once, with six scoring twice, giving the Pack its seventh run-rule victory of the season.
Freshman Sam Harris (1-0) earned his first college win after coming in as relief and pitching three innings, allowing just one run on one hit, with two walks and four strikeouts.
The Wolfpack scored eight runs in the first three innings, including a four-run second and a four-run third. They added two runs in the fifth, and their third four-run inning came in the sixth to put them ahead by double digits.
Luke Hemric started against the Seahawks and went 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run. He walked three and struck out two, working out of trouble after inducing two double plays in his time on the mound. Ryder Garino finished the game for the Wolfpack, going 1.2 innings without allowing a base runner and striking out two.
Back in his hometown, Luke Nixon had two bunts both going for base hits, after his first he later scored on a Frassman double to give the game's first run.
Head then bunt perfectly down the foul line to set up Novy, who hit the longest home run of the season, traveling 443 feet and off his bat at 112 MPH, giving the Pack a 4-0 lead.
Singles from Frassman and Johnson in the third brought home three runs, and McHugh followed with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the inning to make it 8-0.
The Pack drew 10 walks, marking the fifth time they've reached double-digit walks in a game.
A sacrifice fly from former Wolfpack player Jake Bechtel scored the Seahawks' first run, and a solo home run added another, but that was all the home team managed.
McHugh singled in the fifth to add two more runs for the Wolfpack, and in the sixth, he capped off his six-RBI night with a 386-foot home run to left field to secure the run-rule victory.
NC State will stay on the road, traveling to Tallahassee, Fla., for an ACC series and a top-11 showdown against Florida State starting Friday, March 20th at 6 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ACCNX.
