RALEIGH, N.C. – In the bottom of the eighth inning and with the score tied at 2-2, Brayden Fraasman broke the deadlock with an RBI single, and Dalton Bargo's third home run of the season provided some needed insurance. The Wolfpack won its fourth straight game Saturday night, beating the Tigers 6-4 at the Doak.
Ty Head did what he does best, drawing a walk to start the eighth inning and using his speed to steal second. Chris Mchugh moved him to third before Luke Nixon was intentionally walked, bringing up Fraasman, who delivered the big hit to put the Wolfpack in front for good.
NC State (4-0) saw some big-time pitching performances as well. Ryan Marohn, Aiden Kitchings, and Collins Black (1-0) combined for 17 strikeouts while allowing just one earned run. Black, in his Wolfpack debut, earned his first career win and matched a career high with two innings pitched, also setting a career high with six strikeouts.
The 17 strikeouts were the most since the Wolfpack struck out 18 against Canisius last year.
Ryan Marohn got the start for the Wolfpack and had a solid outing with eight strikeouts in five innings, allowing just four hits and one earned run.
Princeton (0-1) kept the Wolfpack bats in check for much of the game. Starter Justin Kim went four innings, allowing five hits, no walks, and four strikeouts, with an unearned run to his name.
Elliot Eaton (0-1) gets the loss after going four innings and allowing five runs on four hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
It was the Tigers jumping out in front early with an RBI single in the second and adding a second run in the third after a double and a fielding error by Rett Johnson.
Heads up base running from Head in the bottom of the third put the Pack on the board after he scored off a throwing error from the Princeton first baseman on a dropped third strike.
A 403-foot home run from McHugh tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. It was his first home run of the season.
Kitchings helped keep the game tied in the seventh after working himself into a jam with runners on second and third and no outs. Kitchings would regroup and retire the next three Tigers in order with a strikeout, pop-up, and groundout.
After walking the first batter he faced, Black settled in and struck out the side in the eighth. Princeton got two runs back on a home run after an error, but Black secured the win with another strikeout.
