RALEIGH – The NC State women's basketball team led wire-to-wire against SMU to win, 91-54. The Pack used a strong first quarter of outscoring SMU 25-9 and a 23-2 run in the third to fuel the 37-point win.
All 10 players scored, highlighted by five in double figures and Qadence Samuels' season-high 16 points. The Pack shot 54.5 percent from the field and outrebounded the Mustangs 51-26. The post duo of Khamil Pierre (14 points and 12 rebounds) and Tilda Trygger (13 points and 10 rebounds) tallied double-doubles for consecutive games.
The Pack started out the game with an 8-0 edge, as NC State held SMU scoreless for the first 3.5 minutes. Brooks broke the Pack's drought in the start of the quarter with a jumper. SMU got as close as 16 points again, but the Pack cruised on an 16-0 run thanks to a 3-pointer by Zamareya Jones, who also delivered a layup through contact. A Jones triple extended the Pack's lead to 32 with 3:30 left in the quarter. Jones scored 11 of her 15 points in the third and NC State matched a season-high 30 points in a quarter, outscoring SMU by 19 in the frame to lead 70-35 after three.
NC State kept rolling into the fourth quarter, starting on an 8-2 run. Adelaide Jernigan then drained a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 44 with 5:37 left in the game. POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Wes Moore Opening Statement:
"I am proud of the way we bounced back. Obviously, we didn't have one of our best nights on Thursday, and I'm proud of the way they came out ready to play. Playing at 6:00 p.m. on a Sunday seems a little unusual, but they showed up. I'm proud of the way we took care of the ball in the second half, and we had ten assists and five turnovers. I'm really proud of the job on the boards, outrebounding them. It was 51-26, so it was a great job on the boards, and I always think rebounding is one of the most important parts of the game. I need to get everybody involved, a lot of people were able to get out there and score some points and get some confidence, hopefully. So, again, it was good day for our team."
