NC State played to a 0-0 draw at Elon on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Rudd Field. The Pack outshot the Phoenix, 20-6, and controlled possession for 58% of the match but could not find the back of the net in its second draw of the campaign.
The Pack applied early pressure, outshooting the Phoenix, 9-2, in the opening half. Jade Bordeleau placed two shots on target and Erica Roberts added another, forcing Elon goalkeeper Katie Bisgrove into three first-half saves. The deadlock carried into the second half as the Pack generated 11 more scoring chances. Mana Nakata and Mary Frances Symmes each tested Bisgrove with shots on target, but the Elon keeper came up with three saves to keep the game level.
In the tie, Olivia Pratapas returned to goal and kept Elon off the board with two saves, helping NC State earn its second unbeaten result of the season.
A Win Would …
Sunday's match is the 19th all-time meeting between NC State and Campbell, with the Pack holding a 15-1 advantage in wins over the Camels. The teams have also played to a pair of draws. Despite the Wolfpack's significant advantage in victories, it was the Camels who got the best of NC State a season ago, earning Campbell's lone series win at home, 2-1.
Scouting the Camels
Campbell comes into Sunday's match with a 2-2-2 record, with wins over North Florida and Radford. Most recently, the Camels dropped a 1-0 decision to Coastal Carolina on Thursday, Sept. 4.
Sophomore defender Gillian Garrison leads the squad with two goals, while five other players have also found the back of the net this season. In goal, Anaïs van Doesburg has handled the majority of minutes after making just two appearances in 2024, tallying 20 saves and posting a 1.55 goals-against average.
The Camels are led by head coach Jeff Gross, now in his fourth season at the helm, where he holds a 23-20-16 record.
Keeping the Momentum
While the Pack didn't leave Elon with a win, Higgins was encouraged by the effort and commitment shown in the team's second draw of the year. NC State kept constant pressure on the Phoenix with 20 shots and showed clear improvement defensively, limiting Elon to just six attempts after conceding 20 to Utah in its previous outing. With one of its strongest performances of the season in hand, the Wolfpack will look to carry that momentum into its nonconference finale against Campbell.
Bordeleau Braces
The last time NC State played at home, Bordeleau notched the second multi-goal performance of her career with a brace in the match against Western Carolina on Aug. 27. She was also the last NC State player to score multiple goals in a game, recording a hat trick against George Washington on Sept. 15, 2024. After leading the Pack with four goals in 2024, the junior continues to spearhead NC State's attack and remains a go-to option in the final third.
Welcome Home, Coach Higgins
NC State McMurray Family Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan named Higgins the sixth head coach in program history in December 2024. Higgins arrived in Raleigh after three seasons at East Carolina, where he guided the Pirates to a historic 2024 campaign that included a 10-4-7 record, an American Athletic Conference title, and the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament berth.
Prior to his time at ECU, Higgins coached at his alma mater, Lenoir Rhyne, leading the Bears to multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. The former standout player brings more than a decade of coaching experience and a proven track record of building winning programs.
Higgins' first year with the Wolfpack features an entirely new coaching staff. Associate head coach Joanna Fennema, a former North Carolina standout, led Lenoir Rhyne to the 2024 NCAA Tournament. Assistants David Rodriguez (NC Courage Academy) and Juan Basabe (Lenoir Rhyne) also join the staff, each bringing valuable collegiate and club-level experience.
Breaking Down the Roster
NC State opens 2025 with a 25-player roster featuring 14 returners and 11 newcomers, including five transfers, four freshmen and two sophomores. By class, the Pack have five seniors (one redshirt), nine juniors (one redshirt), seven sophomores and four freshmen.
The team returns its 2024 leaders in goals and points, Bordeleau, and assists leader, Nakata. Five starters from last season are back: Nakata (18 starts), Pratapas (17), Yuna Aoki (14), Alex Mohr (12) and Bordeleau (11).
Three transfers arrive from programs led by current staff including Mackenzie Smith and Roberts from ECU and Lilly Soltz from Lenoir Rhyne.
