PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Top-ranked NC State men's soccer moves to 7-0-2 after collecting a 1-1 draw against Pittsburgh on the road Friday night.
In its second-straight conference battle on the road, NC State men's soccer was unable to get past Pitt up north. Despite Donavan Phillip scoring 69 seconds in, the Wolfpack finished the evening with a 1-1 score.
After Phillip's 13th goal of the season in the second match, the Panthers followed up just 10 minutes later with a goal in the 12th minute. The home team was able to connect a corner-kick directly to the head of its player to find the back of NC State's net for the first time this season.
The goal ended NC State's streak of eight shutouts to start the season, which was the most shutouts to start a season since Creighton last did it in 2011. Between his time with SNHU, UNH, and NCSU, head coach Marc Hubbard has the second-best goals against average among all active DI coaches.
The Pack had numerous close opportunities that almost resulted in more points on the board by outshooting its opponent 19-5. Frankie DeFrancesco put up two back-to-back close chances in the second half, and Donavan Phillip even scored a goal that was called back due to a foul in the box.
In goal, Logan Erb recorded a vital save in the 84th minute to hold the draw for his team. Despite his streak being broken, Erb still remains the top goalkeeper in the NCAA in personal goals against average.
