Pack Falls in Eighth Inning to Blue Devils

The Blue Devils posted six runs in the first two innings to take an early lead over the Pack.
The bottom of the third saw the entire Wolfpack batting order step up to the plate. Senior's Michele Tarpey and Taylor Ensley led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Freshman Kendall Simmers followed suit but laid down a two RBI double to get the Pack on the board, 6-2.
Sophomore Tori Ensley doubled down the right line with two outs to drive home Simmers and senior Alaina Smith would single to left to bring home Ensley to bring the Pack within two.
The Pack knotted things up in the bottom of the seventh. Taylor Ensley recorded her third hit of the day, a single up the middle, to get on base and junior Hannah Church smashed her 20th homer to tie the game six-all.
After five scoreless frames for the Blue Devils, a single from Hannah Shuler allowed Duke to regain the lead in the top of the eighth. A bases loaded walk and grand slam allowed the Blue Devils to push their lead to six for the second time in the rubber match.
NC State was unable to get anything going offensively in the bottom half of the eighth as the Blue Devil defense was quick to shut down the Pack.
Taylor Ensley led the Pack with three hits on the afternoon and tallied her 150th career hit in the bottom of the third.
Smith and Tori Ensley each added two hits to the box score while Church and Simmer's each tallied a pair of RBI's.
The Wolfpack falls to 25-27 overall and finishes the conference slate 6-18.
NC State will head to Auburn for the final weekend of the season. The Tigers will host the Pack for a three-game series starting on Friday, May 2, as NC State awaits to see its postseason fate.
