RALEIGH, N.C. – With the series tied, NC State baseball delivered in the rubber match Sunday, defeating the 14th-ranked Louisville Cardinals 11-1 in eight innings from the Doak on a day the 1975 NC State ACC Champions were recognized before the first pitch.
Louisville entered the weekend as NC State's first-ranked opponent of the season. It is the first series win over a ranked opponent since ending the 2024 season with a sweep over No. 8 Wake Forest.
The visiting Cardinals scored in the first inning for the third straight game, but Wolfpack starting pitcher Ryan Marohn (4-2) would put up zeros the rest of the way after tossing 6.2 innings of one-run ball, allowing six hits, three walks, and striking out four for his fourth win of the season.
Justin DeCriscio led the NC State offense with a 4-5 day with four RBIs, including a home run. It is his second career game recording four hits; DeCriscio becomes the fifth Wolfpack player to have a four-RBI game. Hogue extended his on-base streak to 13 games with a base hit, and Ty Head, Chris McHugh, and Ryan Jaros added a run batted in. McHugh continues to lead NC State this season with 44 hits and 38 RBIs.
Andrew Shaffner made his first appearance of the weekend and team-leading 13th of the season, keeping Louisville off the board. On 21 total pitches, Shaffner went 1.1 innings without allowing a base runner. Shaffner came on with two men on base but stranded both with a fly ball to right field in a 3-2 count.
The Cardinals came into Sunday scoring five runs in the first inning over the series' first two games. They added a sixth on two hits in the first three batters. After two walks, they loaded the bases, and they threatened for more, but Marohn got out of the jam with a first pitch fly out to the center field.
NC State (24-12, 9-6) took the lead in the third and never looked back. With two outs, a throwing error allowed McHugh to extend the inning for DeCriscio, who hit his seventh home run of the season. He is now tied for the team lead with Hogue and Brayden Frassman. DeCriscio hit five home runs in three seasons at San Diego.
The Wolfpack put up four runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead. Another Louisville error allowed pressure to be applied as a Jaros walk loaded the bases. Head used his speed for an infield single and then beat out a throw to second on a fielder's choice, allowing the inning to continue for DeCriscio. DeCriscio added his third and fourth RBI after a single to right field.
On the day, the Wolfpack had six RBIs with two outs. One came in the fifth from Ryan Jaros, who singled through the left side to make it 7-1.
In the eighth, the Wolfpack scored four runs on just one hit. DeCriscio was once again at the center of the scoring after singling, then making his way around the basses, eventually scoring on three wild pitches. Two walks and a passed ball loaded the bases for Matt Heavner. Heavner walked on four pitches to make it 9-1, and another wild pitch to Head added the 10th run.
The fifth wild pitch of the inning gave NC State the walk-off run-rule victory to move to 4-1 in ACC series this season. It was the 10th run-rule win for NC State.
UP NEXT: NC State will make the cross-country trip to California to take on the Cal Golden Bears for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, April 17th, at 9 p.m. EST. All three games will be broadcast on ACCNX and can be heard on WKNC 88.1 FM and the Varsity Network App.
