RALEIGH, N.C. - After a weekend full of historic firsts, the NC State men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped up the inaugural Raleigh Rumble at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center, held November 7–8.
The Wolfpack came out on top, on both the men's and women's sides, combining for a overall team score of 1,580 points. Ohio State followed with 1,031.5 points, while Virginia Tech rounded out the top three with 793.5.
Individually, both Wolfpack squads dominated their respective team races. The NC State men claimed first with 790 points, ahead of Ohio State (485.5) and Virginia Tech (429). On the women's side, the Wolfpack women matched that success, taking the top spot with 790 points, followed by Ohio State (546) and Virginia Tech (364.5).
The weekend also featured a special guest appearance from Kyle Sockwell, who made Raleigh his second stop on his "dual meet tour." Adding to the excitement, Sockwell was joined by The Red Terrors, NC State's student section, who took over lane one as part of the first-ever in-water student section. Bringing a unique and electric atmosphere for college swimming.
Across the two-day meet, the Wolfpack delivered a dominant performance, collecting 37 event victories, three school records, and two pool records. Multiple swimmers also etched their names into the program's top-10 all-time lists.
Session #1
The Wolfpack opened the session 1 with fireworks as Tyler Driscoll broke the school record in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 23.18, leading a 1-2 finish alongside Erika Pelaez.
The team's momentum carried through the session, with Leah Shackley and Kennedy Noble sweeping the 50 backstroke on the women's side, and Quintin McCarty and Hudson Williams matching them for the men.
Eneli Jefimova made her home debut memorable, setting her first school record in the 50 breaststroke with a 26.30—her first race at the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center.
The Wolfpack women continued their dominance as Cassie Moses and Lily Christianson took the top two spots in the 50 freestyle, contributing to a complete women's sweep of all 50-yard knockout events.
Other standout swims included Pelaez's school-record time of 54.08 in the 100 individual medley, Leah Shackley and Kennedy Noble's 1-2 finish in the 200 fly, and Lance Norris and Max Carlsen going 1-2 in the 1000 freestyle—with Carlsen's 8:55.83 ranking ninth in program history.
The Wolfpack capped off an incredible session by sweeping both men's and women's 400 medley relays.
Session #2: Open Water
The second session of the Raleigh Rumble marked a milestone moment for collegiate swimming as NC State competed in the first-ever open water event in college history.
Grace Monahan led the way, winning the women's race, as the Wolfpack women secured 1st, 3rd, and 4th-place finishes to take the team victory.
On the men's side, NC State continued to impress, finishing 2nd, 4th, and 5th in the inaugural event, establishing the Wolfpack as early leaders in this new discipline.
Session #3
The Wolfpack stayed red-hot in Session 3 with more record-breaking swims and podium sweeps.
Tyler Driscoll and Erika Pelaez repeated their success with a 1-2 finish in the 50 fly, while Leah Shackley and Kennedy Noble again went 1-2 in the 50 back. Shackley's 23.51 tied Noble's 2024 mark for the third-fastest time in school history.
Hudson Williams and Quintin McCarty matched the performance on the men's side, taking first and second in the 50 back, with Williams' 20.96 ranking sixth all-time at NC State.
Cassie Moses and Lily Christianson added another 1-2 finish in the 50 free, and Erika Pelaez posted the eighth-fastest 400 IM in school history at 4:08.42, leading a 1-2 finish with Lisa Nystrand.
On the men's side, Arsen Kozhakhmetov delivered the third-fastest 100 breaststroke in program history with a 52.13.
The Wolfpack completely swept the 100 butterfly, as Shackley, Pelaez, Driscoll, and Teia Salvino finished 1-2-3-4, before Shackley and Noble repeated their 1-2 finish in the 100 back, and Hudson Williams and Gavin Keogh did the same for the men.
The night concluded with another historic race—the first-ever mixed 200 freestyle relay SKINS race in college swimming. The Wolfpack team of Kaii Winkler, Jerry Fox, Cassie Moses, and Erika Pelaez claimed victory over Ohio State with a time of 1:21.09.
Diving Highlights:
Junior Grace Hurley earned a fourth-place finish on the 1-meter board with a season-best score of 248.50. On Saturday morning, Riley McGrath, Keean Guthrie, and Hurley led the Pack to a first-place team finish on the 3-meter, combining for a score of 234.00.
Session #4
NC State closed out the Raleigh Rumble with depth. The Wolfpack swept four of the eight top-two spots in the knockout rounds, continuing their streak of dominance across multiple sprint events.
Aiden Hayes added his name to the record books in the 50 fly, clocking 20.46—the fifth-fastest time in program history.
In the 200 freestyle, the trio of Kaii Winkler, Daniel Diehl, and Jerry Fox powered to a 1-2-3 finish, while both women's 200 medley relay teams claimed a 1-2 sweep of their own. The men followed suit, winning the 200 medley relay in 1:23.63.
Max Carlsen and Mikolaj Filipak went 1-2 in the 500 freestyle, and Kennedy Noble, Lisa Nystrand, and Teia Salvino dominated the 200 individual medley with a 1-2-3 finish.
To close the meet, both Wolfpack 400 freestyle relay teams captured victories, sealing an unforgettable weekend of performances.
