RALEIGH – With a commanding 2-0 win over Marshall, NC State men's soccer advances to the NCAA Championship Sweet 16 for the second straight season. The Pack will host UNC Greensboro on Sunday, November 30, at 6 p.m.
After being placed as the No. 15 seed, the Pack earned a first-round bye to start the NCAA Tournament. For the second year in a row, both seasons under head coach Marc Hubbard, NC State has advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 match.
With No. 2 seed Virginia being defeated by UNC Greensboro, NC State will now host the third round match in Raleigh. The Wolfpack previously met with the Spartans this season in Raleigh, resulting in a 1-1 tie in October.
Donavan Phillip jumped back onto the score sheet for the first time in several games, opening up with a goal in just the second minute of the match. A corner-kick, serviced by Riley Moloney, was originally deflected by the Herd's keeper, which Phillip was able to head in.
In the 59th minute, Moloney then found the back of the net himself when his corner-kick attempt deflected off the keeper into the net by the back post. Moloney, a defender, was just named to the All-ACC Freshman team a couple of weeks ago.
Six of the 16 seeded teams have already been knocked out of the tournament, and just three ACC teams remain in the bracket (Duke, NC State, and Stanford).
