Wolfpack Commands Hoos in Reverse-Sweep

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Outside hitters Courtney Bryant and Rebecca Ring combined for 41 kills in the Pack's 3-2 reverse sweep win over Virginia Friday evening.
The win moves the Pack to 14-13 overall and 7-10 in Atlantic Coast Conference action.
The Pack opened the match with a 4-1 scoring run, with three points coming from Ring. The Hoos battled back and took its first lead of the set after a block gave them their 10th point. From there, Viriginia held the lead, 15-12, as the two teams went into the media timeout.
Virginia went on to take its biggest lead of the set, 23-18, forcing head coach Megan Wargo-Kearney to use her final timeout. The Hoos went on to take the first set, 25-21, despite the Pack's attempts to rally back.
Ring led the squad with five kills in the opening frame.
The beginning of the second saw the Wolfpack score five unanswered points to take a 7-4 lead over the Hoos, but Virginia quickly regained the lead. The Pack trailed by two (13-15) headed into the media timeout and an exchanging of points began.
The Pack thought it earned its 21st point of the frame but a successful challenge by UVA found that NC State had four contacts, putting the score at 20-all.
The Hoos took a three-point lead that the Pack was struggling to overcome, forcing Wargo-Kearney to use her final timeout. Virginia took the second set, 25-21.
The Hoos took the initial lead to open the third set, but a 6-0 scoring run (8-4) by the Pack forced UVA head coach Shannon Wells to use an early timeout to try and slow the Pack. NC State continued to dominate, leading by as many as seven (18-11).
Ring continued to dominate for the Pack offensively and helped the Pack take the third set, 25-19.
UVA found a new serge of energy to kick off the fourth set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead to force an early Wolfpack timeout. NC State went on a 7-0 scoring run to tie things up and eventually take the lead (13-10).
The Hoos battled back to regain the lead, 17-15, and force the Pack to use its final timeout of the set. After exchanging a few points, the Pack would go on to take the fourth set, 25-22.
Ring and senior outside Courtney Braynt combined for 34 kills through the fourth set.
NC State jumped out to a 7-3 lead to begin the fifth set, forcing UVA to use a timeout in hopes of slowing the Pack. Prior to the timeout, NC State was hitting .571 in the set. The Pack was determined and continued to dominate the final set. Bryant's 21st kill of the evening allowed NC State to take the set, 15-9, and the match, 3-2.
Villar tallied a career high 43 assists in the outing while Francom tied a career high with 10 blocks.

The Pack will remain on the road but head to Blacksburg for a tilt with Virginia Tech. First serve is slated for 1pm on ACCNX at Cassell Coliseum on Sunday.
