DURHAM, N.C. – Collecting its first win in Durham since 2009, third-ranked NC State men's soccer (11-1-3, 4-1-2 ACC) defeated 19th-ranked Duke (7-2-6, 3-2-2 ACC) Saturday night by a 2-0 score to pick up its first ranked win of the season.
The win was a night of many firsts as head coach Marc Hubbard collected his first win over Duke at the helm of the program, the team marked its first win over Duke since 2019, and its first win over the Blue Devils in Durham since 2009.
The rivalry game brought an excellent game as numerous fans in red packed out Koskinen Stadium.
Starting out with a bang, the Pack had extremely close scoring opportunities back-to-back just before Justin McLean scored a header off of a corner-kick by Riley Moloney only five minutes into the game.
A far out strike by Taig Healy in the 68th minute brought his first goal of the season and doubled his team's lead to carry even more confidence throughout the match.
Plenty of yellow and red cards were assessed throughout the game, mainly in the second half, totaling 10 cards total.
Justin McLean was awarded a red card in the 69th minute, prompting the Pack to go on man down. Nikola Markovic was also given a red card, but in the 88th minute, to make the Pack only hold nine players on the field with just a couple of minutes left in the match.
In goal, Logan Erb remained his steady self, recording four saves to put another clean sheet under his belt for the season. Eventually playing two men down, he still ensured keeping Duke off the scoreboard.
