Men’s Soccer Stuns Winthrop in Seven Goal Shutout Win

RALEIGH, N.C. – Tuesday marked the most eventful day for the NC State men's soccer program in the last decade. The Pack advanced numerous accomplishments between becoming ranked for the first time in nearly five years, scoring seven goals in a game for the first time in this century, and starting off a season undefeated in the first five games since the start of the 2012 season.
A new era under Marc Hubbard has proven to bring rising achievements in the start of the 2024 season for NC State men's soccer. A 7-0 win over Winthrop with seven different scorers showcased the dominance of the completely renovated roster.
In appropriate fashion, the current leading goal scorer, Taig Healy, kicked things off first with a goal in the 26th minute off of a deflected save by Winthrop's keeper, pushing him to three goals so far this season.
Donavan Phillip, a transfer from Oakland, recorded his first in the red-and-white shortly after in the 32nd minute when he cleaned up a shot from Hakim Karamoko that hit the right goal post.
In the 40th minute, Drew Lovelace got in on the action when he created an opportunity dribbling into the box off of a ball fed from Nikola Markovic on the back line.
Headed into halftime with a 3-0 lead and 21 shots already tallied, the Wolfpack decided they still had more to highlight in the remaining 45 minutes on the pitch. Alhough with only nine shots in the second half, NC State found the back of the net four more times.
Junior Nare, Aidan Payne, Ervin Cruz, and Sam Presser pushed the score to 7-0 when they each were created opportunities to have their first goals of the season from assists by their teammates.
Nare scored first in the second half in the 71st minute when he was fed a cross from Lawson Abass. He was then followed by Payne with service from Eitan Rosen in the 73rd minute. Payne then continued with an assist on Cruz's goal in the 77th minute. Finally, Cruz then serviced Presser for the seventh and final goal of the night in the 86th minute.
This game marked the first time the Pack has recorded seven goals in a match (records dating back to 1999).
Presser not only documented his first-ever career goal for NC State but also his only minutes ever recorded for the program. Payne's goal was also his first-ever career goal with the team.
