Madsen, Olivares Lead Pack at Cougar Classic

HANAHAN, S.C. - The NC State women's golf team was led by Marie Eline Madsen and Lauren Olivares Leon, who tied sixth and 11th, respectively, at the Cougar Classic played at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, South Carolina. As a team, the Pack finished 14th with a 29-over 881 in the first tournament of the season.
In Madsen's first collegiate tournament, she fired off a 3-under 210 (72-68-71) to tie for sixth in the field of 93 golfers. Madsen had the second lowest score among all freshmen in the field. Her second round of a 68 was done behind three birdies, an eagle at the fourth hole, 12 pars and two bogeys. Madsen finished the tournament tying for a team-high seven birdies, along with tallying one eagle, 40 pars and six bogeys.
Olivares Leon finished just outside the top 10, tying for 11th with a 1-under 212 (70-72-70). With two rounds below par, the senior has bumped her career total of rounds at par or better to 42. Olivares Leon was solid in the final round with two birdies, 15 pars and just one bogey. With her 16th top 20 finish of her career, Olivares Leon logged six birdies and a team's best 43 pars with five bogeys.
Vania Simont was the next finisher for the Pack, tying for 75th with a 15-over 228 (76-77-75). Her lowest round came on Tuesday, in which she had four birdies and jumped up four spots in the standings. She finished the weekend tying a team-high seven birdies and 28 pars along with 16 bogeys and three double bogeys.
Lea Ludwig finished in 84th with an 18-over 231 (76-75-80), while Jaclyn Kenzel tallied 91st with a 23-over 236 (79-77-80).
