
Women’s Golf Records Top Five Finish at Cavalier Regional Preview

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The NC State women's golf team picked up its first top five finish of the season after tallying fourth out of 12 teams at the Cavalier Regional Preview. The Pack carded a 26-over 878 (294-281-303) with its second round total of 281 marking the seventh lowest 18-hole team score in school history. NC State braved the tough conditions during the final round on Tuesday at Birdwood Golf Course to secure its best finish of the young season.
Freshman Marie Eline Madsen led the Pack for the second straight time in as many collegiate tournaments, tying for sixth with a 1-under 212 (71-67-74). Her 67 in the second round marks a new career low, in which she achieved behind five birdies, 12 pars and just one bogey. She had the third lowest par 4s average (3.96) and tied for the sixth most birdies (10) in the tournament field. Madsen has started her collegiate career with two top 10 finishes, four rounds at par or better and two rounds in the 60s.
Vania Simont was the next Pack finisher, tying for 22nd with an 8-over 221 (73-71-77). Her best round came in the second with her first round at par this season behind four birdies, 10 pars and four bogeys. She logged a 4.07 par 4s average, ninth best in the field.
In her first tournament of the season, Ellise Rymer finished with an 11-over 224 (77-71-76) to tie for 30th. Her best round was in the second with an even-par 71 with three birdies, 13 pars, one bogey and one double bogey. After a rough start to the third round at 8-over par at the turn, Rymer went 3-under on the back nine to finish inside the top 30 of the 71-person field.
Also in her first tournament of the year, Caitlin Whitehead tied for an NC State career best 34th place with a 12-over 225 (73-72-80). Her 72 in the second round matched a career-low round, in which she also had a near clean card with 17 pars and just one bogey in her second to last hole.
Playing as an individual, Lea Ludwig logged a career best finish with a tie for 41st. She carded a 16-over 229 (76-76-77). Lauren Olivares Leon finished the week tied for 50th with a 19-over 232 (79-77-76).
NC State finished the tournament fourth in par 3s average (3.13), par 4s average (4.24) and birdies (36), as well as fifth in par 5s average (5.12) and pars (170).
