RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State women's soccer team fell 1-0 to East Carolina on Sunday night at Dail Soccer Stadium. Prior to Sunday's match, the Wolfpack honored its four seniors – Eliza Rich, Annika Wohner, Fernanda Soto and Brianna Weber – in front of a crowd of 2,189.
East Carolina's Abby Sowa scored the game's only goal with a short-range strike to make it 1-0 Pirates in the 38th minute. Sowa's header off a corner kick forced a save from Wolfpack goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas. Sowa then collected the rebound and finished for the opening goal.
NC State (0-1-1) increased the pressure on East Carolina (1-0-0) in the second half, outshooting the Pirates 5-1 in the final 45 minutes. The Wolfpack first came close to the equalizer in the 64th minute when Jade Bordeleau's close-range strike was saved onto the left post by ECU goalkeeper Maeve English. Taylor Chism then forced another save on the ensuing corner kick.
Abi Hugh again almost knotted the score when she headed a ball toward the ECU goal in the 83rd minute. English, however, corralled Hugh's attempt to preserve the Pirates' one-goal advantage.
Freshman Antonella Mazziotto again led the Pack with two shots. Pratapas made three saves after facing 11 attempts from East Carolina, three of which were on target.
