WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 16 NC State men's tennis (12-5, 5-2) dropped a 4-2 decision to sixth-ranked Wake Forest (20-4, 6-1) on Friday afternoon, with the Demon Deacons taking the doubles point and a trio of singles matches to secure the in-state matchup.
Robin Catry and Fons Van Sambeek each won singles matches for the Pack, with Catry defeating Wake's Luciano Tacchi 6-3, 6-2; and Van Sambeek knocking off No. 38 Filippo Moroni 6-1, 6-2.
After falling behind 2-0, Catry and Van Sambeek tied the score at 2-2 with their pair of singles wins. The Pack dropped a pair of doubles matches as the Deacs clinched the doubles point, with Catry and Luca Staheli falling 6-2 and the duo of Martin Borisiouk and Joseph Wayand dropping a 6-4 contest.
Wayand later lost in straight sets as the Pack fell behind 2-0, and after Catry and Van Sambeek's wins, Wake closed out the match with Staheli dropping a 6-4, 7-5; match to Matthew Thompson and a Braden Shick falling in a 7-6, 6-7, 4-6; three-setter.
After the match, NC State head coach Kyle Spencer felt good about his team's performance, quoted by saying, "Great battle today in very tough conditions for both teams. This team competes for each other and today that was on display again… That one will sting for today but the competitive train rolls on with another ACC match at home Sunday and we will be ready!"
The 16th-ranked Wolfpack returns to action on Sunday, Mar. 31, as NC State will host Boston College in an Easter Sunday matchup. Sunday's contest is slated for a noon start time and admission is free for all attendees.
