Wolfpack Breaks American Record; Brings Home Four Medals on Day One of ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – A six-year American record fell Tuesday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center as the Wolfpack men of Aiden Hayes, Sam Hoover, Luke Miller, and Quintin McCarty set the record in the men's 200 medley relay with a time of 1:21.86 to lead the way and earn NC State their first gold of the tournament.
The night also saw the Wolfpack earn two silvers, a bronze, and a seventh-place finish in the men's 1m dive.
After day one of the ACC Championships, the men scored 159 total points to sit in second place, and the women scored 144 points in fourth place.
Women 200 Medley Relay: The evening relay portion started with the Wolfpack women's 200 medley relay team earning the first medal of the competition with a second-place finish and 1:34.22 for their fastest of the season by 18 hundredths of a second. Kennedy Noble led off with a 23.80 split, followed by Abby Arens (26.88), Miriam Sheehan (23.14), and Katharine Berkoff, who brought it home with a 20.40 split time becoming the fourth fastest performer in history.
Men 200 Medley Relay: The quartet of Hayes, Hoover, Miller, and McCarty secured the team's first ACC Championship title of 2024 as they won gold and set the American record that had stood since 2018 by California. With a time of 1:21.86, Hayes led off with a split of 20.44, followed by Hoover in the breaststroke with a split of 23.51, Miller recorded a 19.80 split in the butterfly, and it was closed out by McCarty with an 18.11 split in the freestyle.
Women 800 Freestyle Relay: Annabel Crush started things off at 1:45.40 in the 800 freestyle relay and was followed by Kennedy Noble at 1:46.10 and Katherine Helms at 1:46.66. Keelan Cotter closed things out with a 1:46.00 to give NC State a total time of 7:04.26 and third place.
Men 800 Freestyle Relay: The final relay of the night saw another medal given to the Wolfpack, earning their second silver of the competition as Daniel Diehl, Noah Bowers, Jerry Fox, and Arsenio Bustos dropped eight seconds and 76 hundredths of a second from the entry time to finish in second place. Diehl led off with a split of 1:32.93, Bowers followed (1:32.56), Fox was in third (1:32.68) and Bustos anchored (1:32.05)
Men 1m Dive:
With a score of 318.60, Renato Calderaro secured his spot in the finals, placing seventh during the preliminaries. Bayne Bennett just missed the cut, placing in 11th with a score of 308.10, just 9.75 points off the eighth spot. In the finals, Calderaro again placed seventh with a score of 330.25.
Women 3m Dive:
Helene Synnott and Bayleigh Cranford narrowly missed the top eight cuts in the preliminaries, with Synnott scoring 274.95 to place 10th and Cranford coming in 11th with a score of 269.35. Ashton Zuburg rounded out the three in placing in 24th, scoring 230.25.
