RALEIGH - The 2023 NC State women's cross country team has been named the USTFCCCA National Scholar Team of the Year, the league office announced on Thursday. Additionally, seven members of the NC State cross country program have been named to the 2023 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
This marks the third year in a row that the women of the Wolfpack have been named
National Scholar Team of the Year. The honor comes on the heels of a third-straight National Championship and highlights the academic excellence of the team, who maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.51.
Five members of the Back-to-Back-to-Back National Champion NC State women's cross country team were named to the All-Academic squad. Grace Hartman, Gionna Quarzo, Jenna Schulz, Katelyn Tuohy, and Amaris Tyynismaa all garnered All-Academic honors, while Hannes Burger and Brett Gardner represented the Pack on the men's team.
Tuohy and Tyynismaa were the two highest finishers for NC State in the 2023 National Title race, with Tuohy finishing fifth in 19:23.0 and Tyynismaa grabbing 25th place with a time of 19:55.3. Both runners were named All-Americans.
They helped lead NC State to a narrow, one-point victory over Northern Arizona to bring a third-consecutive National Championship back to Raleigh.
Gardner paced the NC State men to a #17 finish at the 2023 National Championships, the Wolfpack's ninth top-20 finish since 2002. The Frankfort, Illinois native clocked in at 30:00.1 to finish 51st. Hannes Burger took 71st with a mark of 30:16.1.
In order to qualify for All-Academic distinction, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at the NCAA Regional Championships or as an All-American at the NCAA Championships.
