Pack Picks Up Two Event Victories, School Record on First Day of Hokie Invite

BLACKSBURG, VA. -Â The NC State track and field team returned to action today, claiming two event victories and a new school record on the first night of the Hokie Invitational.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Middle Distance
Veteran distance runner Sam Bush got the afternoon off to a hot start for NC State as she ran a personal best time of 4:35.67 to finish first in the women's mile and submit the second-best time in program history.Â
Fellow cross country National Champion Grace Hartman didn't finish far behind her teammate, clocking in at 4:36.52 to take second place and set a new personal record. Her time now sits as the fourth-best in school history.
In the men's mile, Brett Gardner also ran his way to a podium finish. The senior came in third after submitting a time of 4:05.73. Joe Jaster also represented the Pack in the race, clocking in at 4:20.38 to set a new personal best.
First-year runner Angelina Napoleon made her collegiate debut in the women's 600m and immediately made an impact. She clocked in at 1:33.78 to finish fifth and establish a new NC State record for the event.
Fellow freshman Kate Putman also debuted, turning in the third-best mark in school history after finishing in 1:34.81.
More history was made on the men's side of the 600m as Jake Toomey recorded a personal best time of 1:20.15, the second-fastest clock-in in school history. Wesley Larson ran and finished the race in 1:21.83 to set a personal best and mark the fifth-fastest time in school history.Â
Bush collected her second podium finish of the night in the women's 1000m, coming in third with a time of 2:44.71.Â
In addition to the school record, Napoleon debuted in the 1000m and clocked in at 2:45.99 to establish the second-fastest mark in NC State history. Hartman joined her teammates in the event and picked up her second personal record on the day as she ran a time of 2:47.49, the third-best in program history.
Putman also debuted in the event for the Wolfpack, running a time of 2:50.07 to mark herself as fifth-fastest in the program record book.
Toomey continued his impressive evening with another personal best performance in the men's 1000m. He finished in 2:24.21 to tie the record for the second-best time in school history.
Miles Ally also picked up a personal best in the event, running the race in 2:26.93, which ranks eighth in NC State history.
Sprints
In the women's 60m hurdles prelim, Jakerra Covington finished in 9.19 to set a new personal best.
Jumps
The second event victory of the night came courtesy of Jirah Sidberry in the women's long jump. The defending ACC Indoor Women's Field MVP lept 6.22m to take first and bring home the gold.
Zahra Bichara also competed in the event and turned in a season-best performance of 5.90m. Jayda Hunter established a new personal best after jumping 5.46m.
