SERIES HISTORY
NC State and Duke will face off for the 40th time on Sunday night. A few notes tracking the Pack's ACC contest in Durham are listed below:
• In the most recent matchup in Durham, NC State rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the fourth-ranked Blue Devils 2-1 at Koskinen Stadium on Oct. 7, 2021. Annika Wohner tied the score in the 53rd minute to help send the match to overtime tied at 1-1. Jameese Joseph then delivered the game-winner in 110th minute, marking its first of two wins over top-five opponents in a 10-day span. NC State later defeated No. 3 North Carolina 1-0 at Dail Soccer Stadium on Oct. 16.
• Duke leads the all-time series 25-11-3. The Pack holds a 1-2-2 record against the Blue Devils in the past five matchups.
• Over the last three matchups between NC State and Duke at Koskinen Stadium, the winning side has had to score two goals to earn all three ACC points. NC State's two goals earned a victory in 2021, while a 1-1 tie in 2019 sits in the middle of Duke's 2-0 win in 2017.
A TOUGH SLATE
NC State faces a challenging schedule this fall with eight of its opponents featured in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Top 25. Two other opponents, Virginia Tech and Rutgers, received votes in the poll. Five of NC State's nine remaining regular season opponents are ranked inside the Top 25 of the United Soccer Coaches most recent poll released on Tuesday. Through Thursday night's games, the combined record of NC State's 10 opponents so far this season is 37-17-21 (.633).
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS
No. 16 Duke enters its third ACC matchup with a 1-1 league record, shutting out Boston College 2-0 on the road before dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker at home against No. 10 Notre Dame on Thursday. Duke led 1-0 in Thursday's match before the Fighting Irish scored in the 86th and 87th minutes, respectively, to steal all three ACC points in Durham. Sophomore Kat Rader, a Preseason All-ACC Team selection, leads the Blue Devils with five goals, 11 points, 25 shots and 14 shots on goal. The Blue Devils were predicted fifth in the ACC Preseason Coaches Poll. All three of the Blue Devils' defeats have come to top-25 opponents.
BACK TO PROMINENCE
Since head coach Tim Santoro has taken over the program, the Wolfpack has surged back to national prominence. Prior to the breakout 2016 season, the Pack had not made the NCAA Tournament since 1996. Since 2016, NC State has earned an at-large bid every fall season, advancing to the Sweet 16 three times. Santoro's record in his first three seasons was 13-42-2. His record since the breakout 2016 campaign is 71-52-25.
STEPPING UP BETWEEN THE POSTS
Junior goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas has stepped into the starting role following the season-ending injury to Maria Echezarreta. Pratapas, who spent her first two seasons at Louisville, has started every match for NC State beginning with its road matchup at Denver. She ranks second in the ACC with 5.14 saves per game, tying her career-high three times with eight saves.
UP NEXT
NC State returns to Dail Soccer Stadium for a rivalry matchup against No. 1 North Carolina on Saturday. Saturday's match in Raleigh is set for 7 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
