RALEIGH – NC State women's soccer dropped its ACC opener 2-0 to Pitt on Sunday afternoon at Dail Soccer Stadium.
On a rainy afternoon in Raleigh, Pitt struck first in the final 30 seconds of the opening half when Ellie Coffield finished from close range off a corner kick. Anna Bout logged the assist after her cross deflected off NC State defender Brianna Weber and landed in the path of Coffield for the goal.
NC State's Jameese Joseph recorded both of the Wolfpack's shots in the first half, forcing a save from Pitt goalkeeper Ellie Breech in the 25th minute. Joseph then slipped in behind the Panthers' back line for her second attempt, but her shot from the right side of the box went high and wide of goal.
Joseph and freshman Hannah Jibril, who made her first-career start on Sunday, combined to force a save from Breech within the first five minutes of the second half. Jibril charged at Pitt's back line and laid off a pass to Joseph inside the box to earn a corner kick.
On the ensuing corner, Taylor Chism elevated to head Emika Kawagishi's cross toward goal. Pitt defender Sage Stelzer saved Chism's attempt off the goal line before blocking Leyah Hall-Robinson's rebound attempt to keep the Panthers ahead 1-0.
Amanda West doubled Pitt's lead with a long-range effort in the 57th minute. Sarah Schupansky logged the assist for a short layoff pass prior to West's strike.
Joseph paced the Pack with four shots and two shots on goal. Olivia Pratapas tied her career-high with eight saves.
