RALEIGH, NC – NC State jumped out to an early lead over Howard and that cushion was just enough for the Pack to win its second consecutive home contest.
The Wolfpack defeated the Bison 3-1 thanks to first half goals from Junior Nare and Yuta Toya.
Those goals came within 11 minutes of one another and that explosion would be all NC State needed in the midweek tilt. NC State (4-2) remains perfect at home this season while improving to 2-0 all-time against Howard (0-4).
The Wolfpack got another late insurance goal from Luke Hille, who scored on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.
It was the second goal in as many games for Nare, who has three goals on the season. Nare and Toya both had an assist on each other's goals.
"I think for me it doesn't really matter if it's a goal or an assist as long as the team is winning," Nare said. "It could be me scoring or someone else, it doesn't matter as long as we are contributing to the team's success."
Howard hadn't scored a goal all season, but that changed late in the first half when Marcus Lewis cut the NC State lead in half.
In the second half, the Wolfpack did a good job of building a wall around the net. Freshman Ben Voase, starting in his third straight game in goal, finished with one save, playing all 90 minutes.
NC State never stopped being aggressive, finishing with 20 shots on the evening. Hille led the way with seven shot attempts, but wasn't able to convert anything until late in the contest. Hille drew a foul on Jackson Lewis, setting up a PK. Hille converted the penalty kick, allowing the Pack to let out a sigh of relief and avoid the midweek letdown.
"We started off pretty strong," Nare said. "We didn't let them connect pluses, we created plenty of chances and managed to get the win."
NC State improves to 4-0 at home this season, the second best start to a home schedule under head coach George Kiefer.
Up next: NC State will travel to Virginia on Saturday for a 7 pm match.
