Justice Called Up by Rockies on Friday
RALEIGH, N.C. – Former NC State pitcher Evan Justice earned his first Major League call-up on Friday from the Colorado Rockies, as announced by the organization on Friday afternoon.
Justice, a Third Team Perfect Game and D1Baseball All-American in 2021, dominated on the mound during the Wolfpack's run to the 2021 College World Series, compiling a 1.67 ERA in ACC and NCAA Tournament play. The left-hander surrendered just three earned runs in 16.2 postseason innings while tallying 22 strikeouts.
The standout southpaw began the 2021 season as a starter before transitioning back to the bullpen later in the year. He finished the 2021 campaign with 13 saves, which ranked second in the ACC and fourth in the NCAA. Justice finished his career with an 11-2 record with 147 strikeouts over 133.2 innings pitched in a Wolfpack uniform.
The Rockies selected Justice in the fifth round (5-140) of the 2021 MLB Draft. Justice was the third of seven members from the 2021 College World Series team to hear their name called in the 2021 MLB Draft. When he makes his debut, he will become the 46th former student-athlete who played at NC State and the 51st player who attended NC State to play in the major leagues.
Justice rose quickly through the Rockies' farm system in 2023, beginning the year in High-A Spokane before earning promotions to Double-A Hartford, Triple-A Albuquerque and the Colorado Rockies active roster. Justice sported a 6-1 record with a 3.49 ERA in 38 relief appearances in the minor leagues this season, tossing 63 strikeouts while limiting opposing batters to a .131 batting average against him.
Justice joins fellow Pack Pros Trea Turner (Philadelphia Phillies), Carlos Rodon (New York Yankees), Patrick Bailey (San Francisco Giants) and Andrew Knizner (St. Louis Cardinals) as the five former NC State players currently in Major League Baseball. Justice and Bailey both earned their first MLB call-ups this season with Bailey's MLB debut coming on May 19.
The Rockies are in the middle of a three-game set against the Baltimore Orioles. Sunday's series finale at Camden Yards is set for 1:35 p.m.
