DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State baseball team dropped game two at the ACC Baseball Championship 4-2 to No. 11 Miami on Thursday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
With the win, the Hurricanes advance out of Pool D to the semifinals. NC State is eliminated from the tournament after going 1-1 in its pool, defeating fifth-seeded Duke 8-7 in 11 innings on Tuesday night.
Miami scored the go-ahead run in the fourth and did not relinquish the lead over the final five innings. NC State scattered eight hits as the two teams combined to leave 23 runners on base.
Miami (38-18) struck first in the top of the first after a leadoff walk. Edgardo Villegas then blasted a two-run home run to put Miami in front 2-0.
NC State (35-19) responded in the bottom of the frame with a pair of runs to even the score. LuJames Groover III and Cannon Peebles recorded back-to-back singles before Chase Nixon drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases. Eli Serrano III then delivered a single to left center, plating Groover III and Peebles to knot the score at 2-2.
The Hurricanes got back out in front in the fourth after a pair of hits to lead 3-2. Renzo Gonzalez led off the frame with a double, scoring on an RBI single off the bat of Carlos Perez. Justin Lawson entered in relief to record a strikeout to end the inning.
The Pack threatened in the fifth, loading the bases with a single from Noah Soles, an HBP from Groover III and a walk from Jacob Cozart. Rafe Schlesinger, who improved to 3-1 on the season, entered on a 2-2 count with two outs and induced a fielder's choice from Serrano III to escape the inning unscathed.
Miami extended its lead in the eighth, working the bases loaded before plating a run on a passed ball.
The bullpen efforts of Rio Britton, Lawson, John Miralia, Carson Kelly, Win Scott and Baker Nelson combined to pitch 5.1 innings, limiting Miami to one run (unearned) on four hits while striking out 10 batters. Lawson struck out a team-high six batters over 3.1 innings, while Kelly entered in a bases-loaded, nobody out situation in the eighth and allowed just one Hurricane run to score.
Groover III turned in a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 on the night. Serrano III drove in both the Pack's runs with his RBI single in the first inning.
Schlesinger (3-1) earned the victory after tossing 0.2 hitless innings. Andrew Walters earned the save behind 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts.
