FORT LAUDERDALE, FLA. -- NC State swimming and diving Associate Head Coach Mark Bernardino has been selected as one of two inductees to the 2023 class of the American Swim Coaches Association Hall of Fame, as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
Bernardino will be inducted into the ASCA Hall of Fame at an awards dinner in September during the 2023 ASCA World Clinic. The American Swimming Coaches Association Hall of Fame shares that "inductees have developed the most accomplished athletes and programs in our sport and have contributed to the history and success of American swimming. Through their accomplishments, they have elevated the sport of swimming in the United States and around the world."
Since joining the NC State coaching staff in 2018, Bernardino has led the Wolfpack distance swimmers to dominate finishes on the conference and national stages. Most recently, Will Gallant and Ross Dant finished first and second in the 1650-yard freestyle at the 2023 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, marking the school's second-ever National Title in the event. Junior Owen Lloyd also scored in the mile, finishing 11th to mark three members of the Pack posting points in the event. At the 2023 ACC Championships, Bernardino's leadership guided James Plage and Gallant to win the 500-yard freestyle and 1650-yard freestyle Conference Championship titles, respectively.
During Bernardino's five completed seasons with the Wolfpack, both the men and women's teams have finished in the top-eight nationally and top-two in the ACC each year. Since his start with the Pack, NC State's distance group swimmers have collectively won a National Championship title, eight ACC Championship titles, and a USA Swimming National Championship title. Also highlighting the record books, NC State swept the top four spots in the women's 400-yard individual medley at the 2019 ACC Championships and in the men's 500-yard freestyle at the 2022 ACC Championships, with Wolfpack men also finishing 2-3 in the 1650-yard freestyle at the 2022 NCAA Championships.
Before his time at NC State, Bernardino was associate head coach at South Carolina for four seasons and prior to that, served as head coach at Virginia from 1978 to 2013, where the Cavaliers captured a combined 27 ACC Team Championships. His 521 career victories rank fifth all-time in NCAA swimming, and he has coached six NCAA individual champion swimmers, three NCAA record performances, and 13 Olympians. Having coached such a large number of elite athletes, Bernardino has coached at least one NCAA or USA Swimming National Champion each year of the last four consecutive decades.
