Wolfpack Completes Home-and-Home Sweep of the Seahawks
Faced with a 2-1 deficit entering the bottom of the fourth, the Wolfpack batted around to flip its one-run deficit into a 9-2 lead. The Pack slugged five hits and capitalized on two Seahawk errors to score eight runs in the fourth frame. The Pack's eight runs in the bottom of the fourth marked the most from NC State's offense in a single inning this season.
An error allowed the first Wolfpack runner to reach before Parker Nolan and Kalae Harrison doubled on back-to-back pitches down the left-field line, putting the Pack ahead for good at 3-2 behind Harrison's two-RBI double.
Jacob Cozart recorded an infield single, beating out a throw to first base. UNCW pitcher Mason Murdock then bobbled the ball at first base, allowing Eli Serrano III to score all the way from second base to make it 4-2 Wolfpack. Chase Nixon then cleared the bases when his three-RBI double dropped in in front of UNCW centerfielder Trevor Marsh, giving the Pack a 7-2 advantage.
Will Marcy then entered as a pinch hitter and crushed a double to right center, bringing home Nixon from second to stretch the lead to 8-2. A bases-loaded RBI walk from Matt Heavner then brought in the eighth and final run of the inning.
NC State carried its offensive momentum into the bottom of the fifth, scoring three more runs to extend its lead to 12-2. A solo home run from LuJames Groover III and a two-run blast from Marcy accounted for the Pack's three runs in the fifth inning. Groover III's opposite-field homer came after fouling off four pitches.
The Wolfpack scored in the first inning for the 13th time this season when Cozart ripped a double to right field, scoring Serrano III from second base after the Wolfpack first baseman led off the first with a walk. NC State is now 16-1 on the season when scoring first.
UNCW (19-12) scored its first two runs of the game with a single run in the second and fourth innings, respectively. Alex DeMartino registered a solo home run to left field in the top of the second before Jac Croom delivered a fielder's choice RBI in the fourth, giving the Seahawks their sole lead of the game at 2-1.
UNCW scored the contest's final run of the night with an infield single with two outs in the seventh inning. Jayson Arendt beat out a high chopper to the shortstop to trim UNCW's deficit to 12-3.
P.J. Labriola (2-0) earned the win on the mound after pitching 2.1 innings in relief of starter Baker Nelson. Nelson pitched a career-high 4.1 innings while allowing just two runs (one unearned) in his third-career start in a Wolfpack uniform. As a staff, Nelson, Labriola, Rio Britton and Carson Kelly combined to toss 10 strikeouts while allowing just one walk.
At the plate, NC State hitters drew a season-high 11 walks off UNCW pitching, forcing the Seahawks to use 10 pitchers on the night.
Five NC State hitters recorded multi-hit performances – Groover III (three), Cozart (three), Marcy (two), Nolan (two) and Harrison (two). Nixon and Marcy paced all NC State batters with three RBI apiece.
