Pack to Face Arkansas, Ohio State, and Oklahoma
RALEIGH – The NC State gymnastics team will compete in the second leg of the 2023 NCAA Championships on Thursday, Mar. 30, as the Wolfpack will face off in a quad meet against No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 16 Ohio State, and No. 17 Arkansas. The contest will be held at Oklahoma's Lloyd Noble Center as part of the Norman Regional.
The Pack advanced to the second round after a dual-meet victory over Ball State on Mar. 29.
NC State posted a 196.075 in its play-in meet, highlighted by an all-around mark of 39.475 from Emily Shepard that claimed all-around champion honors in the meet. Shepard fired her 36th and 37th career score of 9.9+ to aid the effort, both of which earned individual event titles on bars and floor.
The Pack also matched its season-high bars score in its last time out, tabbing a 49.225 for the third time in 2023. NC State's second rotation marked the ninth time in the last three season which the Wolfpack have fired a score of 49.225+ on bars, having only done so six times from 2005-2020.
NC State's final tally of 196.075 additionally marked its seventh-straight score of 196+, registering a new program record for consecutive scores of 196+. Over 43 years of competition, the Wolfpack have only strung together four or more straight scores of 196+ five times in program history, three of which have come under the direction of head coach Kim Landrus.
The Pack's next three opponents each enter Wednesday's contest having most recently competed in their respective conference championship meets, most notably Oklahoma having claimed the Big XII crown on Mar. 18, with a score of 198.400.
The top-ranked Sooners are the defending national champions, having posted the highest NQS (198.335), average score (198.150), and high score (198.575) in the country this season.
No. 16 Ohio State brought home a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, firing a 196.975 on Mar. 18. The Buckeyes season-high score came in its final home meet of the season, with a 197.600 in a tri-meet victory over Illinois and Kent State.
The second-round, evening-session lineup is completed by No. 17 Arkansas, with the Razorbacks coming off a seventh-place finish at the SEC Championships. With an NQS of 197.080, Arkansas posted its season-high score of 197.475 on Jan. 27, edging out LSU for a dual-meet victory.
Thursday's meet is set to begin at 7:45 p.m. (EST), with a live stream available through ESPN+. The top-two finishers of the evening session will face the top-two finishers from Thursday's afternoon session on Saturday, Apr. 1. The afternoon session will take place at 3 p.m. (EST) on Mar. 30, with No. 8 Alabama, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 22 Illinois, and No. 25 Iowa facing off in a Thursday matinee.
