NC State places four in double figures to advance to Vegas Showdown Championship Game
LAS VEGAS – The NC State men's basketball team led by as many as 17 points in the second half and turned back every Vanderbilt run to hold off the Commodores, 84-78, Thursday night at Michelob Ultra Arena.
The Pack advances to the championship game of the Vegas Showdown. Tipoff on Friday night is 10 p.m. ET and the Pack will play the winner of Arizona State and BYU on ESPN2.
Dennis Parker, Jr., the only freshman on NC State's team, had the best game of his young career Thursday night, finishing one rebound short of a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds. He shot 7-of-10 from the field and added a team-high two blocks.
Jayden Taylor finished with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting.
DJ Burns finished with 13 points and nine rebounds, while Casey Morsell also reached double figures with 10 points.
NC State forced Vanderbilt into 19 turnovers and closed the game with a 23-7 advantage in fast break points.
After taking a 10-point lead into halftime, NC State watched Vanderbilt score the first eight points of the second half to cut NC State's advantage to 43-41 early in the second half. The Pack responded with a 17-2 run over the next five minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 60-43, with 11:36 to play.
Vanderbilt cut the Pack's lead to 66-58 with 6:17 to play, but DJ Horne buried a three-pointer on NC State's next possession to push the lead back into double-digits.
The Commodores made one last push going on a 6-0 run to get within six points with under three minutes to play, but NC State scored the next four points to go back up by double digits with one minute to play.
NC State started the game 2-of-9 from the field which allowed the Commodores to jump out to an 8-2 lead. The Pack didn't take its first lead of the game until a DJ Horne three-pointer with 10:08 left in the half gave NC State an 18-17 advantage.
The Pack's lead was 20-19 when it went on an 18-6 run to take a 38-25 lead on a Michael O'Connell teardrop with 4:20 left in the half. NC State would extend the lead to 14, 43-29, with 2:42 left in the opening half, but Vandy would score the final four points of the half to close within 10, 43-33, at the break.
After starting the half 2-of-9, NC State hit 16 of its final 24 shots of the opening 20 minutes, to shoot 54.5 percent from the field in the first half.
