Third Straight Year the Wolfpack Reach the Semifinals
CARY, N.C. – Sophie Abrams and Anna Zyryanova highlighted the NC State women's tennis team's run at the ITA All-American Championships by reaching the doubles semifinal over the weekend.
The duo became the third straight doubles team to reach the semi-finals at the event, following last year's winners Amelia Rajecki and Nell Miller, as well as Alana Smith and Jaeda Daniel in 2021.
Across the week-long event, the Wolfpack added 11 more ranked wins, combining six single wins with five double wins.
Despite going 2-1 in qualifying, Abrams and Zyryanova moved into the main draw as lucky losers. They took full advantage of the opportunity, defeating four ranked opponents en route to the semi-finals.
The unseeded Zyryanova and Abrams first took down No. 40 Cai/Mukhortova (UW) 8-6, followed by beating No. 13 Honer/Reuter (UCSB) 7-5, 6-3, then took down No. 21 Andreach/Beckman (ND) 6-4, 6-4. In the quarterfinals, the duo upset No. 1 of the bracket and No. 2 overall, Reese Brantmeier and Elizabeth Scotty of North Carolina, 6-3, 3-6 (10-7).
Abrams also put together an impressive run in the singles bracket, earning her way into the main draw after going unbeaten in qualifying action. She won six matches in four days, seeing two ranked wins, beating No. 67 Stammel (Vanderbilt) and No. 73 Chavatipon (Texas).
Also, seeing ranked singles victories was Rajecki over No. 26 Broadus (Pepperdine) and Abigail Rencheli defeating No. 20 Arsenault (Auburn). Freshman Gabriella Broadfoot took down No. 114 Quiterio (Charlotte), while Zyryanova, in singles action, saw a win against No. 83 Redelijk (Pepperdine)
Also qualifying for the doubles main draw were Rajecki and Maddy Zampardo as they beat No. 60 ranked Ma/Yepifanova (Stanford) 8-5.
