Annika Wohner sealed NC State's win in the 88th minute with her fourth goal of the season, following up her initial blocked shot before putting the Pack ahead 2-0. Goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas recorded her second straight shutout in the win, marking the third shutout of her Wolfpack career.
SERIES HISTORY
NC State and Notre Dame will face off for the 12th time on Sunday afternoon. A few notes tracking the Pack's ACC contest in Raleigh are listed below:
• All three of NC State's victories against Notre Dame have come in Raleigh with the Wolfpack and Fighting Irish splitting the six prior matchups with three wins apiece.
• NC State's most recent victory over Notre Dame came in a dominant 3-0 victory on Oct. 27, 2019, at Dail Soccer Stadium. Ricarda Walkling and Jameese Joseph scored in back-to-back minutes early in the first half to build a 2-0 lead before Tziarra King put the game out of reach with her 12th goal of the season in the 77th minute.
• NC State won the first matchup in the series back on Sept. 5, 1992. The Wolfpack won the high-scoring matchup 4-3 in Raleigh.
• Notre Dame leads the all-time series 8-3-0.
SCOUTING THE FIGHTING IRISH
No. 12 Notre Dame has suffered just one defeat over the past month, entering Sunday's contest with a 9-2-4 record and a 5-1-2 mark in the ACC. The Fighting Irish fought back from an early 1-0 deficit at North Carolina to earn a point against the third-ranked Tar Heels on Thursday. Seven of Notre Dame's nine victories have come by multiple goals, including four of those victories against ACC opponents. Notre Dame was predicted fourth in the 2023 Preseason ACC Coaches Poll and currently sits in third place in the ACC table. Kiki Van Zanten, Maddie Mercado and Kristina Lynch pace the Fighting Irish with six goals apiece, while Leah Klenke ranks first on the roster with nine assists.
PICKING UP RESULTS
After starting its season 1-5-3, the Wolfpack has earned a result (draw or win) in five of its past seven ACC games. NC State holds a 2-2-3 record over its past seven matchups, recording its second straight home ACC victory with Thursday's 2-0 shutout over Syracuse. During its past seven games, NC State has picked up points on the road in three of its four road matches. With its recent run of form, the Pack sits just one point off the sixth and final spot for the ACC Tournament.
YOU SHALL NOT PASS
Goalkeeper Olivia Pratapas and the NC State defense have recorded two straight shutouts, highlighted by the Pack's shutout victory against Syracuse on Thursday. Thursday's defensive effort helped the Wolfpack record its first shutout victory since Aug. 25, 2022, when NC State goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta helped the Pack blank Campbell 1-0. NC State has kept opponents off the board for over 206 minutes, not allowing a goal since the 64th minute against Virginia on Oct. 8.
NEW RECORD (AGAIN) AT THE DAIL
One in, one out. That was the attendance situation on Sept. 30 for NC State's record-breaking crowd against Tobacco Road rival and top-ranked North Carolina. Before halftime, Dail Soccer Stadium hit fire marshal capacity at 3,972 fans. Fans outside the stadium were only allowed in if fans inside the facility exited for a one-to-one swap.
The record crowd of 3,972 shatters the previous record set on Sept. 7 against Michigan State (2,506). On that night, the first 200 students received Barbie-themed T-shirts for "Barbie Night" at Dail Soccer Stadium. That new record shattered the previous total (2,023 against UNC on Oct. 1, 2010) by over 450 people.
Overall, NC State ranks 15th nationally in cumulative attendance with 11,076 fans attending games at The Dail this season. The mark ranks third among all ACC programs, while the Pack's average attendance of 1,385 ranks 13th nationally and fourth among all ACC teams.
LOOKING TO CLIMB THE LADDER
Head coach Tim Santoro can also reach a new wins' milestone in 2023, needing just two victories to move into second place alone in the all-time wins column in NC State women's soccer head coaching history. Santoro's 86 career victories sit just one behind Laura Kerrigan's 87. The program's inaugural head coach, Larry Gross, holds the overall program record with 146 wins at NC State.
