DURHAM, NC – NC State took the short trip to Durham searching for its first road win of the season.
Playing in primetime against No. 15 Duke, the Pack traded blows with the Blue Devils for most of the match, but Duke was able to edge out NC State, 2-1.
"I thought there were steps in the right direction," Wolfpack head coach George Kiefer said. "We just played one of the best teams in the country and went toe-to-toe with them, so there's a lot of things to build on for sure."
The Blue Devils (8-3-1, 3-3-0) struck first, getting a goal from Forster Ajago in the 15th minute of action.
NC State (6-8, 1-5) answered when Will Buete scored his fourth goal of the season off an assist from freshman Hakim Karamoko. The two teams went into the locker room at halftime knotted at one each.
"I thought we could have had a couple of more goals," Buete said. "We were making chances. We've been in a lot of these games, we showed that we can play up to this level and I think we're close to it."
Duke went up a goal when Antino Lopez found the back of the net off a rebound. Wolfpack freshman Samuel Terranova, making his first career start, blocked the first attempt from Lopez, but didn't recover in time to stop the second.
NC State's last chance at tying the game came when it appeared Like Hille had a one-on-one with Duke keeper Julian Eyestone. Hille, though, was called offsides. The penalty was called in the 84th minute.
The Wolfpack started freshman Samuel Terranova in goal and made a switch in its formation in an attempt to throw off the Blue Devils.
"The formation we switched to, with the three back system," Kiefer said. "It's not anything we want to be doing, changing formations this late in the year, but all the things thrown at us and I thought we showed some good progress."
