RALEIGH – The No. 17 NC State women's soccer team suffered its first defeat this season after falling 2-0 to Harvard at Dail Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
NC State's run of five matches unbeaten to open the season came to a close Sunday behind a brace from Harvard's Ainsley Ahmadian, who scored the game's opening goal in the 31st minute before doubling the Crimson's lead with a goal in the 50th minute. The Wolfpack (4-1-1) fired six shots in the defeat, including a team-high three shots from senior Jameese Joseph.
The Pack logged the game's first shot on goal in the ninth minute when Leyah Hall-Robinson registered a shot on frame from inside the right side of the box, forcing a save from Harvard (4-0) goalkeeper Anna Kaprenko in the ninth minute.
Wolfpack goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta kept the Crimson off the scoresheet early in the match, making a pair of excellent saves within a five-minute span. Echezarreta's first save came off a direct free kick from Harvard's Hannah Bebar, pushing the ball over the top of the crossbar. Her next save came minutes later off a Crimson corner kick, blocking an in-swinging cross before getting up and denying Ahmadian on a short-range effort.
The Crimson grabbed the opening goal in the 31st minute when Ahmadian finished off a cross from Bebar with her left foot.
Harvard doubled its lead just over four minutes into the second half when Ahmadian drilled a right-footed shot from outside the box, picking out the top-right corner for her second goal.
NC State increased its offensive pressure following Ahmadian's second goal when Joseph fired a shot on target in the 55th minute, forcing another save from Kaprenko. Joseph again came close to adding her name to the scoresheet when she forced a turnover, collected the ball and ripped a shot just left of the Crimson's goal in the 71st minute.
Echezarreta recorded a season-high five saves on the afternoon. Freshman midfielder Eliza Rich also made her first-career start in Sunday's match.
