9/18/2022 10:21:00 PM | Women's Soccer
RALEIGH – The No. 20 NC State women's soccer team stormed back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to capture a 2-1 comeback victory over Wake Forest on Sunday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
The Wolfpack (6-1-3) handed the Demon Deacons (6-1-2) their first loss of the season behind goals from Alexis Strickland and Jameese Joseph in the final 13 minutes to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 ACC victory.
Faced with a 1-0 deficit after Laurel Ansbrow's goal in the 35th minute, the Wolfpack increased its offensive pressure in the second half, outshooting the Demon Deacons 6-5 in the final 45 minutes. Strickland recorded three shots for the Pack in the first 30 minutes of the second half, finding the equalizer on her fourth shot of the period when she buried the ball into the left part of the net. Leyah Hall-Robinson and Annika Wohner each recorded assists on Strickland's 78th-minute equalizer.
Joseph then notched her team-high third game-winning goal of the season less than 7 minutes later, fielding a long ball from Jenna Butler before slotting home the game-winner into the bottom-right corner of the Wake Forest net.
Entering Sunday's match, Wake Forest allowed just one goal in its first eight matches. The Wolfpack doubled that total in 6 minutes and 26 seconds.
Sunday's win over Wake Forest marked the Pack's first victory over the Demon Deacons since Sept. 25, 2016, which also ended in a 2-1 victory at Dail Soccer Stadium.
Goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta made three saves on the night, including a pair of top saves in the opening 30 minutes to keep the game scoreless.
Strickland paced NC State with four shots, while Joseph (two) and Wohner (one) each registered shots of their own.
