RALEIGH – The NC State women's soccer team scored all four of its goals in the opening half to trounce Rhode Island 4-0 at Dail Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.
The Wolfpack (1-0) scored all four of its goals within a 23-minute stretch in the first half, peppering the Rhode Island goal with 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes.
NC State opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Jenna Butler and Leyah Hall-Robinson combined to find Alexis Strickland in the box for the Pack's first goal of the season. Butler played a pass down to Hall-Robinson down the right side of the pitch before Hall-Robinson delivered the decisive pass to Strickland to make it 1-0.
The Wolfpack doubled its lead less than 11 minutes later when forward Jameese Joseph threaded a ball behind Rhode Island's back line to Hall-Robinson to make it 2-0. Hall-Robinson gathered Joseph's pass and dribbled around URI starting goalkeeper Faith Hutchins to bury the ball into the back of the net.
Strickland then secured her first-career brace when Hall-Robinson logged her fourth point of the night, sending in a cross for Strickland to head home to make it 3-0 in the 30th minute. Hall-Robinson's two assists in the Wolfpack's opening-night victory marked a career high. She also tied a career high with four points.
Less than two minutes after subbing on, freshman Taylor Chism registered her first goal with the Wolfpack to make it 4-0 in the 36th minute. After earning a corner kick, Butler rose up to meet Brianna Weber's cross, smacking her shot off the crossbar. Annika Wohner then sent a shot on target before Chism cleaned up the rebound for her first-collegiate goal.
Seven members of the Pack made their NC State debuts – Madison Reid, Sarah Arnold, Eliza Rich, Kayla Siddiqi, Cienna Kim, Brooklyn Holt and Chism. Holt also recorded her first-career start after featuring in NC State's first starting 11 of 2022.
Goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta made four saves to help NC State notch its first clean sheet of the season.
