Wolfpack Earns No. 10 seed at ACC Championships
RALEIGH – No. 3 Florida State bats were hot all evening as NC State suffered a 10-6 Atlantic Coast Conference loss on Sunday inside of Dail Softball Stadium.
The Wolfpack tried to stay with the Seminoles (49-5, 19-5 ACC) early but was unable to slow down FSU's momentum. NC State finished the regular season with a 33-22 overall record while going 7-17 in conference action.
Libby Whittaker was a force at the plate going 3-for-4 with an RBI, her first three-hit performance of the season and second of her career. Brittany Jackson, Alaina Smith and Sam Sack accounted for the remaining three Wolfpack hits in the contest as each of them hit a home run.
Aisha Weixlmann took the loss in the circle to move to 13-7 on the year. Weixlmann finished with a stat line of 3.2 innings, six runs and three strikeouts.
FSU led off the game with back-to-back home runs on Saturday before the game was suspended due to weather. Resuming the game on Sunday, the Wolfpack answered in the bottom half of the first as Jackson hit a solo homer to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
After the Seminoles added a run in the second and third innings, NC State added another run off an error to make the score 4-2. Trailing 6-2 in the fifth, Smith stepped up to the plate and hit a homer to center field. In the sixth inning, both teams hit a two-run home run to continue the three-run gap.
Florida State added two insurance runs in the final frame to take a 10-5 lead before Whittaker drove home the final run of the regular season with an RBI single to left field which led to the final score, 10-6.
