RALEIGH – NC State bats started to heat up late in the game, but the early deficit was too much to handle as the Wolfpack dropped an 8-4 decision to No. 3 Florida State in Atlantic Coast Conference softball action on Sunday afternoon.
The Pack (33-21, 7-15 ACC) hit three home runs in the sixth inning but could not keep its momentum in the seventh to pull off the comeback.
Alaina Smith, Carson Shaner and Gracie Roberts each accounted for a home run in the contest. Maddie McPherson took the lost in the circle to move to 13-11 on the season. McPherson finished with a pitching line of 5.0 innings, seven runs (six earned) and two strikeouts.
The Seminoles (48-5, 18-5 ACC) took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off a two-run home run and never looked back. The Pack responded in the bottom half of the first, scoring a run off an error throw.
FSU added two runs in the third before a three-spot in the fifth to take a commanding 7-1 lead after five innings. In the sixth, Smith hit a leadoff home run before Shaner followed up with her 11th homer of the season.
