DALLAS – NC State baseball freshman Tommy White has been named a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Trophy Award, as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) on Thursday afternoon.
It is known as the most prestigious award in college baseball and is given annually to the top player.
White, a St. Pete Beach, Fla., native, has had a sensational first season with the Wolfpack. He hit five home runs on Opening Weekend and hasn't looked back since as he has hit 22 this season and tallied 67 runs batted in.
He leads all freshmen nationally in home runs and runs batted in and ranks among the top 10 in Division I baseball in both categories.
His 22 homers tie ACC freshman home run record, which was set by Chris Diaz in 1998, and he is three away from the NC State single season record (25) and four from the NCAA freshman record (26).
On the year he is slashing an impressive .365/423/.740 with 24 multi-hit games and 18 multi-RBI games, including five multi-homer outings. Additionally, he is currently on a 19-game reached base streak.
NC State is set to close out its regular season this weekend with a three-game series against Wake Forest. The teams will play Thursday and Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. All three games will be broadcast on ACCNX and there will be a radio broadcast on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App.
