RALEIGH – NC State softball split its games on the first day of the Garnet & Black Round Robin as it defeated East Tennessee State, 4-0 before falling to host South Carolina, 9-3 at Carolina Softball Stadium on Friday.
After the 1-1 day, the Wolfpack moved to 27-14 on the season. In non-conference action, the Pack is 22-4 after Friday's contests.
ETSU Recap
Maddie McPherson tossed a gem as she improved to 9-5 on the season after throwing her first shutout of the season. McPherson finished the day with 6.0 innings pitched, a career high 10 strikeouts, no walks and only allowed three hits.
Kaylee Lambrecht scored NC State's first run in the first inning off a wild pitch. Libby Whittaker recorded the sole hit which turned into a three-run home run in the fourth, her sixth homer of the season.
ETSU (5-31) had two big opportunities to score in the fifth and seventh innings as the Bucs were able to place a runner on third with no outs in both innings. Both threats were erased with two strikeouts and a fly out.
SOUTH CAROLINA RECAP
Early defensive struggles seemed to be the difference in the second game of the day for NC State.
Logan Morris went a perfect 2-for-2 with a home run and two walks while both Kaylee Lambrecht and Alaina Smith added a hit and an RBI apiece. Aisha Weixlmann suffered the loss in the circle to move to 11-6 after posting a stat line of 1.2 innings pitched, eight runs (two earned) on two hits.
South Carolina (20-17) scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. In the second, the Wolfpack responded with an RBI double from Smith. Lambrecht plated NC State's second run with an RBI single in the fourth before Morris tallied the Pack's final run with a solo homer in the seventh.
