COLUMBIA, S.C. – NC State softball finished action at the Garnet & Black Round Robin on Saturday defeating East Tennessee State, 5-3 before dropping a tight 3-1 decision to South Carolina inside of Carolina Softball Stadium.
The Wolfpack (28-15) wrapped up action in Columbia going 2-2 over the past two days.
ETSU RECAP
NC State used a third-inning rally to hold off any attempt of a comeback for the Buccaneers (5-33).
Sam Sack finished the game with a perfect 2-for-2 outing at the plate with a RBI and a stolen base, her first of the season. Randi Farricker followed behind going 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI.
Aisha Weixlmann (12-6) earned the win as she tossed 5.0 innings only giving up one run while striking out six batters.
Sack drove home the first run of the game in the first inning off an RBI single. In the third inning, Farricker hit a double off the center field wall that allowed Kaylee Lambrecht and Alaina Smith to score to give the Pack a 3-0 lead.
Later in the inning, NC State pulled off a double steal with Farricker stealing home. Logan Morris recorded NC State's final run as she hit her 13th homer of the season, a solo shot to left field in the fifth inning.
SOUTH CAROLINA RECAP
The Wolfpack stayed close with South Carolina (23-17) but could not get the big hit to cash in the extra runs in the tight battle.
Randi Farricker finished 1-for-2, tying her season high with two walks while Sam Sack had another perfect outing at the plate with a 1-for-1 performance and a walk. Maddie McPherson (9-6) was dealt the loss after tossing 6.0 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out three batters.
Despite having many early opportunities to score runs, NC State took advantage of a first-and-third double steal in the fifth inning to score its sole run of the game.
The Wolfpack had a solid chance to cash in either the tying run or go-ahead run in the seventh as the Pack loaded the bases with one out. After a pitching change, the Gamecocks ended NC State's threat by turning a double play to end the game.
Up Next
NC State returns to ACC action on April 15 when the Wolfpack travels to Atlanta to play a three-game series against Georgia Tech. The series opener is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch on ACC Network Extra.
