RALEIGH – NC State baseball (11-8) returns home Tuesday after a four-game road swing to host North Carolina A&T (9-10) at Doak Field at Dail Park. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. with a broadcast on ACCNX and audio stream on WKNC 88.1 and the Varsity Network App.
STARTING PITCHERS
RHP Garrett Payne (NCSU) vs. RHP Jaheim Brown (A&T)
LAST TIME OUT
NC State traveled to No. 8 Florida State last weekend for a three-game series. After weather postponed the series opener on Friday, the teams played game one on Saturday and the Pack was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell, 13-5.
The teams played a doubleheader on Sunday, and after the Pack forced a rubber match with a 15-4 win in the first game of the day, the nightcap went to 17 innings and the Seminoles won in walk-off fashion. It was the longest game for the Pack since June 9, 2013, when it defeated Rice, 5-4 (17 inn.), in the NCAA Super Regional to advance to the College World Series.
A NCAA record 54 combined strikeouts were recorded in the contest, and NC State's 28 were the most since March 19, 2016, against Notre Dame.
SERIES HISTORY
Tuesday will be the 24th all-time meeting between NC State and NC A&T, with the Pack having won all 23 prior meetings.
The squads last met on April 14, 2021, in Raleigh, and the Pack earned a 10-4 win.
FULL CIRCLE FOR WHITAKER
After battling multiple injuries since joining the program in 2019, the 2022 season has been a full circle campaign for Logan Whitaker. He currently leads the pitching staff with a 1.10 earned-run average and 1-1 record in 16.1 innings.
In his two starts last week at Elon and Florida State, he yielded just one hit in 8.0 shutout innings and struck out nine batters.
VILLAMAN GOES LIGHTS OUT
Southpaw Chris Villaman was lights out in the Pack's rubber game on Sunday at No. 8 Florida State, as he fanned 12 batters in 5.0 innings in relief. His 12 strikeouts matched his career high for a single game, he but reached the mark in three less innings than the last time he accomplished the feat.
The last time he tallied 12 strikeouts was against UNCW on May 11, 2021, in Raleigh in eight innings of work.
CAREER DAY FOR GREEN
Freshman Payton Green hit his first career home run on March 19 at No. 8 Florida State, a solo shot in the fourth inning to right field. He proceeded to homer again in his next at bat, a three-run shot to left field in the sixth inning.
His four runs batted in on the day were a single-game career high.
TOMMY TANKS
Tommy White lived up to his name in the first game of the Pack's doubleheader at Florida State on Sunday, as he homered twice to drive in a combined four runs.
That was the third time this season he has hit multiple homers and sixth time this year he has driven in four or more runs in a game. He ranks second in the NCAA with 11 long balls and 36 RBIs on the year.
