AUSTIN, Texas - In a rematch of the 2021 NCAA Championships semifinal, fourth-ranked NC State women's tennis (11-1) took down third-ranked Texas (7-2) on Sunday afternoon, beating the Longhorns on the road by a 4-3 score.
The victory over the reigning national champion was the Pack's sixth over a ranked opponent through its first 12 matches of the year. The doubles point proved to be the difference as the team split singles action.
The Wolfpack opened the match with victories on doubles courts two and three, the first coming for No. 51Â Priska Nugroho and Sara Nayar. The duo sailed to victory, posting a 6-1 defeat of Vivian Ovrootsky and Bella Zamarripa. With play knotted up at 4-3 at number one doubles, Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli clinched the doubles point first on court three with a 6-1 win over Peyton Stearns and Charlotte Chavatipon.
Heading into singles play with a 1-0 advantage in the team score, the Pack clinched the match with a trio of straight-set singles wins.
Texas was able to get on the board first in singles with Sabina Zeynalova's 6-0, 6-1 win over Nell Miller, but No. 124 Nugroho put the Pack back out in front, defeating Chavatipon 6-2, 6-1. Sophie Abrams put NC State one away from clinching the competition, taking down Ovrootsky 6-4, 6-3.
The Longhorns added a win on court six, but Rencheli served out the match in a top-40 showdown on court two. Her 6-3, 6-4 win secured the team victory.
NC State will have a week off before returning to action for four home matches in a row. The Wolfpack will step into ACC play on Friday, March 4 as it hosts Florida State at 3 p.m. that day. All home matches at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center are free to attend. Fans are required to wear masks for any indoor competitions per NC State's University Community Standards.
