
Softball Sweeps Opening Day Games

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – NC State softball began its 2022 campaign at the River City Leadoff held at Jacksonville with a 3-2 win over Winthrop before a dominant 8-0 (five innings) win over host Jacksonville in the nightcap on Friday.
The Wolfpack (2-0) pulled off the comeback win over the Eagles (0-1) in its season opener and used the late momentum from game one in its second game against the Dolphins (0-1), earning its first shutout of the season.
WINTHROP RECAP
NC State could not find any offensive momentum until the sixth inning when Logan Morris recorded the Wolfpack's first hit of the game. Winthrop was able to get on the board in the first inning off a wild pitch and a throwing error.
In the sixth, Taylor Johnson hit a single up the middle that scored Gracie Roberts from second to reduce Winthrop's lead to 2-1. Later in the inning with runners on second and third, Winthrop's catcher made a bad throw back to the pitcher, allowing Randi Farricker to score from third.
In the same play, Johnson advanced to second and the Eagles' shortstop grabbed the ball and made a bad throw to third which allowed Johnson to score the final run of the game.
Aisha Weixlmann started in the circle and tossed 5.0 innings with seven strikeouts while only giving up one earned run. Maddie McPherson came in and shut the door as she earned her first save of the season tossing 2.0 innings and striking out four in six batters faced.
JACKSONVILLE RECAP
Both teams posted threats in the early innings but neither team could push a run across. NC State bats came alive in the fourth inning starting with Carson Shaner who hit a two-run home run, her 15th home run of her career, to give the Pack a 2-0 lead.
Morris hit a single up the middle that allowed Roberts to score. With runners on second and third later in the fourth, Sack hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Brittany Jackson from third. On the ensuing play, Kaylee Lambrecht scored off a passed ball to give NC State a solid 5-0 lead.
In the fifth, Jackson kept the momentum going as she hit a two-RBI double to center field before Alaina Smith brought home the final run of the game on a sac fly to left field. Lambrecht and Jackson were perfect at the plate as they went 4-for-4 and 2-for-2, respectively.
Sam Gress tossed a complete-game shutout in the circle, racking up three strikeouts without any walks in five innings pitched.
