JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – NC State kept its fans on the edge of their seats all day as the softball team earned a hard-fought 6-4 victory over Florida A&M before outlasting North Florida, 6-5 in nine innings on Saturday evening at the UNF Softball Complex.
The Wolfpack (4-0) showed a lot of grit as the team was down to its final at-bats in both games but was able to pull off two nail-biting victories to remain undefeated at the River City Leadoff. With the win over host North Florida (3-1) head coach Jennifer Patrick-Swift earned her 400th career victory
FLORIDA A&M RECAP
NC State saw a 2-0 lead turn into a 4-2 deficit in the third as the Lady Rattlers (1-3) scored a run on a hit-by-pitch followed by a sacrifice fly. Florida A&M added its final two runs in the inning off a throwing error. Carson Shaner responded with a solo shot to left field, her second home run of the season, to bring the Pack within one.
In the sixth, Brittany Jackson stole third and was able to advance home off a throwing error by the catcher to knot the game at four. In the bottom of the seventh, Randi Farricker led off the inning with a double before Taylor Johnson hit the walk-off two-run homer to left field to give NC State the 6-4 win.
Kaylee Lambrecht led the offensive charge with two hits, a run scored, a walk and three stolen bases while Johnson added a 2-for-3 night at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base. Aisha Weixlmann came in to get a single out in the seventh which allowed her to earn her second win of the season (2-0).
NORTH FLORIDA RECAP
NC State took an early 1-0 lead in the first as Shaner drove home Lambrecht with an RBI single to left center field. The Ospreys answered in their half of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead. North Florida tacked on a run in the fifth and sixth innings to hold a 4-1 lead going into what seemed to be the final frame of the game.
With two outs, Alaina Smith hit a single that started a rally for the Wolfpack. Lambrecht followed behind with a single before Jackson ran out an infield single to shortstop. With the bases loaded, Logan Morris stepped up to the plate and on the first pitch she hit a double down the left field line that cleared the bases to tie the game at 4.
Weixlmann handled business in the bottom half of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. In the ninth with the intentional runner on second, Lambrecht hit a double down the left field line that brought home Libby Whittaker. Once again, Morris delivered in the clutch as she drove in an insurance run with an RBI single to give the Pack a 6-4 lead.
North Florida added a run in the bottom of the inning but Weixlmann forced a ground out and a pop out to end any hopes for the Ospreys and allow the Wolfpack to win, 6-5.
Morris had a great day at the plate going 2-for-4 with four RBI while Lambrecht followed behind with a 2-for-5 performance, her third multi-hit game this season, alongside three runs scored and an RBI. Weixlmann earned her third win of the season (3-0) as she tossed 3.2 innings, striking out two batters and only allowing two hits.
