Red Team Secures 10-9 Victory
RALEIGH – NC State gymnastics kicked off its 2023 campaign on Saturday in Reynolds Coliseum with the annual Red & White Exhibition meet.
With the full 20-person roster split into two ten-person squads, it was Team Red who clinched a tightly contested 10-9 win.
The alternate scoring method was provided by guest judges Mr. and Mrs. Wuf.
Team Red picked up an early advantage when senior Chloe Negrete stuck her landing on vault giving her unit an early 3-2 lead.
Team White responded with a commanding 4-1 decision on bars, highlighted by newcomer Madeline Reid making her NC State debut.
Team Red threatened during the beam competition, even tying the score at 6-6 after a strong performance from freshman Sofia Obregon. Despite that, Team White maintained an 8-7 edge as the two squads headed into the final rotation on floor.
Once again, it was Negrete who clinched it for Team Red on floor, this time picking up the tenth and final point of the meet.
A strong showing from both teams was complimented by sixth-year head coach Kim Landrus.
"From start to finish the energy was high and it was so amazing to see our newcomers in action and old returnees back on the competition floor," said Landrus.
NC State will now prepare for its 11-meet regular-season schedule which begins on Monday, Jan. 9. The Pack will open the season in a dual meet at in-state foe North Carolina.
