RALEIGH – The NC State women's soccer team opens its final road trip of the regular season Sunday at No. 8 Virginia.
Kickoff for Sunday afternoon's match is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra. Live stats will also be available via StatBroadcast.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite a career-high 14 saves from goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta, NC State dropped its regular-season home finale 1-0 to Louisville on Thursday. The Cardinals grabbed the eventual game-winning goal in the 29th minute on a counter attack. The Pack's best effort of the night came off the right foot of Mia Vaughan in the 68th minute as her shot from outside the box forced a diving save from the Louisville goalkeeper.
SERIES HISTORY
NC State holds a 13-28-4 record against Virginia in the all-time series history. The Pack's last win over the Cavaliers came in Raleigh on Sept. 24, 2009, when the Pack earned a 2-1 win over No. 14 Virginia. Former member of the Pack Paige Dugal recorded a brace in the 2-1 win, scoring in the fifth minute and 88th minute to secure the victory. NC State's last win in Charlottesville came on Oct. 10, 1995, when the Pack earned a 1-0 victory.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia (11-2-3. 4-2-2) holds the sixth and final spot in the ACC Tournament with two conference matches to play. The Cavaliers are 8-1-2 at home this season, dropping their only home contest to then-No. 3 Florida State on Oct. 6. The Cavs have shut out their opponents 10 times, including three times in league play. Haley Hopkins paces Virginia with 10 goals and 24 points, burying three of her strikes for game-winning tallies.
TOP 30 IN THE RPI
The ACC is strong, very strong. Following a 3-3 draw against Miami on Saturday, NC State ranks No. 29 in this week's RPI poll. In fact, NC State is one of 10 teams in the ACC inside the top 50 of this week's RPI. Virginia ranks No. 9 in this week's poll.
COMEBACK PACK
The Comeback Pack. NC State rallied once again on Sept. 29 after going behind first, marking its third comeback win this season. The Wolfpack also has a flair for the dramatic, scoring in the final 15 minutes of games five times. NC State is undefeated (4-0-1) in games it nets a goal in the final 15 minutes.
OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Captain Lulu Guttenberger has been anchoring the NC State backline for years, starting all 92 games throughout her Wolfpack career. Guttenberger needs to make just one more start to set a new NC State record for career starts in an NC State uniform (93). She also needs to make just two more appearances to set the NC State record for career appearances (94). With a start on Thursday against Louisville, she tied Jill Rutten (1986-1990) for the NC State record with 92 matches started in her career.
UP NEXT
The Wolfpack will conclude its 2022 regular-season schedule at Syracuse on Thursday, Oct. 27. Thursday night's match against the Orange is set for 7 p.m. and will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
