No. 11 Penn State Escapes Past NC State With Last-Minute Goal

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Despite holding an 11-8 advantage in shots and putting five of them on goal, the NC State women's soccer team (4-2-2) closed out its nonconference slate on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 setback to No. 11 Penn State (6-1-0).
It was the Wolfpack's second neutral-site match of the weekend at Klöckner Stadium on the University of Virginia's campus, as the Nittany Lions managed to score in the final minute of the contest.
This was the team's first loss away from home this season, as it is now 3-1-2 when not playing in Raleigh.
Even though it was a scoreless first half, the Pack was the better squad as it held a 6-2 advantage over Penn State. All three of Toni Starova's chances were on goal, forcing as many saves from goalkeeper Katherine Asman. Additionally, the NC State backline did not allow Penn State to put a shot on target in the first 45 minutes.
It was a very even second half that saw the Wolfpack grab six more shots, including two on target, but the Nittany Lions managed to find the back of the net with 46 seconds left in regulation to escape with the victory.
The game-winner in the 90th minute was PSU's second shot on frame in the match, as Kate Weisner tallied her first goal of the season. The ball was played across the front of the goal by Kerry Abello, and Weisner was the first to the back post to tap it in.
NC State will open up ACC play September 18 when it returns to the commonwealth to face Virginia Tech. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Va., and the match will be broadcast on the ACCNX.
